Sports Themed Treats - Holiday Treats
Baking and cooking in general is something I don’t do a whole lot of. My dad cooked a lot growing up so I just made sure I married a guy who liked to as well. However, I do love a good treat and really enjoy baking with my kids. So this holiday season we wanted to try and see what sports-themed holiday treats we could find! Here are a few of our favs (please note: I am a “why make sugar cookies from scratch when you can buy a tube at the store?” type person. If you’re like me, or are short on time, just buy the tube!
Baseball (or any ball) Sugar Cookies
Basic Vanilla Sugar Cookie Ingredients
1 cup butter, at room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Directions
In a standing mixer with the paddle attachment, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla extract and combine until egg is completely mixed. Add flour, baking powder and salt and mix well.
Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4" thickness and cut out shapes using cookie cutters (baseball patterned Christmas trees?) or roll into balls.
Bake for about 18 minutes or until golden brown.
Royal Icing Ingredients
4 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup meringue powder
Water
Gel food coloring
Directions
Mix powdered sugar and meringue powder in bowl of stand mixer until well combined. Slowly add water and mix until you get the consistency you want*. Add food coloring to achieve your desired color.
For outlining: consistency should be like glue paste
For flooding: add enough water so that the consistency is pretty runny.
Peanut Butter Soccer Balls
Ingredients
1 cup Confectioner’s sugar
½ cup Peanut Butter
3 tablespoons Butter
Black gel food coloring
Directions
Combine in a medium-size bowl until well incorporated.
In a bowl, combine the sugar, peanut butter and butter. Chill in freezer for 30 minutes or until the mixture is easy to handle. Shape into 1-in. balls and place on a waxed paper-lined baking sheet. Freeze for 30 minutes or until firm.
Meanwhile, melt the candy coating in a microwave-safe bowl. Dip each ball and place on waxed paper to harden.
Once hardened, use the gel food coloring to draw a soccer ball design.
Baseball Cupcakes
Easy is my favorite, so naturally, this is our go to treat! Choose whatever flavor of boxed cake mix and follow the directions for cupcakes.
Ingredients
Boxed cake mix
White frosting
2 cups of red M&Ms
Once the cupcakes are baked and cooled, use white frosting (buy or make homemade) for the cupcakes, and take the M&M’s and line like the lace of a baseball.
